Jamaica Funk
In preparation for next week's trip to Jamaica, I'm listening to reggae. It's not my favorite musical genre, but I'm opening my ears to get me in the mood.
Reggae came on to the music scene in the late 1960s courtesy of The Maytals in Jamaica, particularly in Kingston, and became part of the mainstream in '70s. Many of the genre's songs are noted for their social criticism; a few pay tribute to a higher power.
I've compiled a playlist for the trip, seen below. In the interest of international relations, I've also included a YouTube video from Matisyahu, a Haisidic Jew from Brooklyn and a reggae musician who sings about his faith.
Check them out and tell me what you think. What did I miss? What's on your iPod? What type of music do you pack for the road?
