(Not) Taking Off

Last week, I canceled my vacation to Jamaica after my passport, license and credit cards grew legs on the way to the airport. Instead of taking a "staycation," I returned to work the next day, joining many Americans who forgo vacation days to work for the man.

A survey released this year by the World Tourism Organization showed that only 57% of Americans take all of their vacation time. The numbers have been increasing as people are fearful of losing their jobs in a volatile economy. Not so great, given that in the U.S., 85.8% of men and 66.5% of women work more than 40 hours a week.

North Americans and Asians take the bottom of the list of vacationers with Europeans and Latin Americans making the most of their time off. In France, periods of rest are mandated; 89% of the French take all of their days.

This year, I haven't managed much time off. There are still several weeks remaining; I'll try to squeeze in a week or two of them for a spot on the beach somewhere.

When I returned to work last week, a colleague said to me: "Jamaica will always be there."

Maybe not, dude. Ever heard of global warming?
