Get Lost--Madrid

I liked Madrid immediately, in part because of its public transit system, the cleanest, one of the most thorough, and least expensive in Europe. Outside of the airport area, it's 1 euro to hop around the city on the Metro, which runs until 2 a.m.

That said, you can walk almost anywhere in central Madrid, which I did most of the time. It's the best way to see the city if you have time and just a wee bit of stamina for a few hills.

It's also a great city in which to get lost, particularly in Plaza Mayor, on Gran Via (home to many theaters and stores) and near Puerta del Sol, ground zero for Spain's road system. In each of those areas, you'll find street performers--some of extraordinary talent--of every stripe that can keep you entertained for hours.

I'm glad you enjoyed Madrid. I'm a huge fan. Street performers, public transit, outdoor markets, quality parks, and great art. What's not to like?
