I wouldn't count Spaniards among the most stylish of Europeans, but a scarf is a must accessory. In Spain, it seems to be the equivalent of a watch or earrings for those living in the States. I had no clue when I packed four or five scarves in my luggage since a scarf is also the must-have accessory for traveling.
Every department store, boutique, souvenir shop or Johnny on the corner in cities like Seville has quite a collection for sale starting as low as 3 euros. In New York, they're sold on every corner and in every hue, but Spaniards take it up a notch.
In my unscientifc suvey of women in Cordoba and Seville, 3 out of 4 women tied it on. Men wear them, too, with jeans, khakis and even suits. (If you want a little more flair, pick up a wool cape in Madrid at Capas Sesena. Besides serving as a scarf, here are some other uses for the essential travel accessory:
* Use as a belt (I did once when I left my real belt at home)
* headwrap
* pillow (the ones provided by the airlines aren´t the most comfortable)
* blanket (see above)
* towel
* beach wrap or sarong
* luggage identifier
* hoisting device
