Lost in Lisbon

I'd had my fill of southern Spain when I hopped an overnight bus to Lisbon, the Portuguese capital to the west.

I swooped in, with no plan and no guidebook--who does that?!--knowing only that Lisbon was on the Atlantic. What else? It was a major city that was cheaper than most in Spain. All I really knew is that I wanted to see Cristo Rei, the Jesus statue modeled on the one in Rio de Janeiro.

It wasn't the best travel plan in the world--I wandered a bit before finding a hotel--but sometimes it's great to roam the streets and see what you stumble upon.

Postcards from Portugal's capital:

Who visits a country without a guide book? Journalists! I never use one. I think it keeps you more open. I've always wanted to visit Portugal, since I've written a lot about Cape Verdean musicians living there. Portugal is now the third country in Europe to apply for financial assistance from the EU so I'm wondering if it'll be even cheaper to visit now. The pix are pretty. That Christo statue doesn't look quite as jaw-dropping as Rio's but I see the influence.
