Happy (Hour) in Bermuda

Bermudians love to drink--or so says a local song. From what I can tell, it doesn't really ring true, but one thing's for sure, the islanders love Happy Hour.
There aren't really that many clubs to hit up on a Friday night in Bermuda--it is a civilized place, after all--but Happy Hour is an activity that's taken seriously.

Bars in restaurants, hotels or as separate establishment serve up evening customers in Hamilton, St. George's and the Dockyard. I'm a teetotaler, but never one to pass up a good time, I figured I'd get in on the Friday festivities. I was already at the Fairmont Hamilton Princess, finishing up high tea when folks started arriving on the first-floor terrace so I followed the crowd.

I was a little underdressed as smart-casual is the way to go, but I didn't attract any dirty looks with my just-off-the-plane wrinkled khakis. Good thing because some establishments forbid sneakers and jeans.

The band for the night was lively, the crowd was a melting pot of locals and tourists of varying ages and the terrace overlooked Bermuda's sparkling blue waters. What could be better than that? (Well, maybe a ride on one of those sleek yachts that occasionally cruised by.)

By the way, happy hour is a good time to try "Bermuda's National Drink," the Dark and Stormy, a highball cocktail of dark rum and Bermuda ginger beer over ice. (Or get the rum swizzle at the highly popular Swizzle Inn, a place that one of my friends who travels there frequently insists that everyone go.)

After a few minutes into the Fairmont happy hour, out came--wait for it--the Atlanta Falcons cheerleaders. There didn't really seem to be a reason for them to be there, except to get the crowd going. Lots of men--and me--snapped photos of the cheerleaders with their cellphones. But all evening, I wondered: Where were the Falcons?

(One of these things is not like the others)

FYI, this is the proper way to wear Bermuda shorts, with socks and black or brown loafers
